Friends of Library Wood

Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich, Norfolk, England

NEWSLETTER No. 1

October 1999

Oak leaves and acorn. The oak tree is important to the story of Kett's Rebellion: the 'Oak of Reformation' stood in Thorpe Hamlet, at the heart of Kett's camp.

What's been happening?

Since the inaugural meeting of the Friends, we have been looking for new members - you may have seen our new-look leaflet. If you would like copies to give to friends or colleagues, please get in touch with one or other of the Co-ordinators.

We have been trying to talk to people too - unfortunately, the landowner and developer, Hopkins Homes, has refused to talk, despite its agent's statement at Planning Cmte. that the firm would like to talk to the community. Limited activity has been seen on site: workmen surveying trees, and soil shifted around.

Over at City Hall, the detailed Section 106 agreement on design and community benefits is apparently about to be signed. We do not as yet know the details, but actual building work could start very soon.

We have had more success with the Council's landscape section. George Ishmael, Landscape Manager, talked to Bernard Shanks and Chris Wood on site and is keen for the Friends to be a link to the community regarding the management of that part of Library Wood to be left to us. Watch this space.

Did you know? ... that Aspland Road was named after Robert Aspland Cooper, who owned Aspland House, in the angle of Foundry Bridge Road (Thorpe Road) and the tow-path that became Riverside Avenue, later Road.

Can we have a Town Green?

The Friends intends to seek to register Library Wood as a Town Green for the purposes of the 1965 Commons Registration Act. To this end, we need people: (1) who have used the grounds for a significant number of years (ideally twenty) to fill in a survey form; (2) to knock on doors to get other people to fill them in. If you are able and willing to do either or both of these, please contact the co-ordinators as soon as possible.

Money, money, money ...

The Friends needs a steady income to continue doing its work. We need to pay for telephone and fax calls, stamps, stationery, printing and, in order to do a litter pick (it's getting very bad in there again), a skip. Can you help raise funds? If so, please contact Ann Kar, who is co-ordinating fundraising efforts, on Norwich 663 148.

Also, Marcia Shanks is having to stand down as Treasurer. Our thanks to her for what she's done for us. This means that we need a new Treasurer. Could you do this job? If you have book-keeping experience, so much the better. If you think you could help with this, please contact the Co-ordinators.
